BALTIMORE, Md. - The government shutdown. Cuts to food stamps. Cuts to nutrition education. The news has been grim for low-income families in Maryland.

However, grassroots groups are coming to the rescue of hungry kids, and they're being joined by some of Baltimore's top chefs and restaurants. On Monday night, they will donate their time and resources for an event called Taste of the Nation Maryland, with proceeds going to the Share Our Strength "No Kid Hungry" campaign to end childhood hunger.

Chef Jonah Kim of Pabu restaurant, Baltimore, said one of the goals is to help provide better meals in schools.

"They might not have the funding to do nutritious meals or balanced meals," he said. "It will definitely be impactful for a state like Maryland, and in Baltimore."

Kim added that parents can also help teach their kids about healthy eating by getting them involved in grocery shopping and meal preparation. Children who come into his restaurant are always interested in what's happening in the kitchen, he said.

"We have an open kitchen, so they see a lot of stuff. A lot of parents bring in their kids and walk them by the open kitchen, and they're sort of in awe with it. So, involve them with a lot of things and take the time to do so," he advised.

Taste of the Nation Maryland will take place at the American Visionary Art Museum on Monday night. Tickets are still available. Information about the event is at http://ce.strength.org.
