Planning Ahead for Heart-Healthy Holidays

PHOENIX - For many people, the holidays bring fun, family and food together. It can be especially difficult to stay on a healthy course during the last couple months of the year, but it isn't impossible.

According to Chrissy Meyer with the American Heart Association, there are ways for everyone to enjoy the time, and still keep heart health in mind.

"This is kind of the 'official, unofficial' kickoff to the holiday season, here in November," she said. "Obviously, one of the best things about the holidays is the food, but there is a way you can enjoy your favorite holiday foods and also maybe eat a little bit healthier over the holiday season as well."

Meyer remarked that many people think a heart-healthy diet means no red meat, but that isn't the case.

"There are more than 30 cuts of lean beef that are approved by the American Heart Association as part of a heart-healthy diet," she said.

She said now is the time to start planning those holiday eating strategies, and noted that the AHA has all kinds of healthy eating tips on their website, Heart.org.
