The "Unselfie" Introduced for 2nd Annual Giving Tuesday

MINNEAPOLIS - With Black Friday and Cyber Monday now in the books, people around Minnesota and the nation are being asked to think of others on this "Giving Tuesday".

According to co-founder Henry Timms, that can include donating money or time to a favorite charitable group. A new spin this year is having people post what he calls an "unselfie" on social media.

"Share a picture of you doing something useful for others. Share a picture of a cause that matters deeply to you. Do something unselfish around Giving Tuesday," he urged.

Among the non-profits in Minnesota taking part in Giving Tuesday is "Be The Match", which spokeswoman Mary Beth Heffernan said connects bone marrow donors with patients suffering from blood cancers.

"Every year more than 12,000 patients in the U.S. are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases such as leukemia or lymphoma, and really, the best or only hope for a cure is a transplant," she said.

Heffernan said those who would consider being an organ donor can join the Be The Match registry, and she explained that diversity is important.

"Patients are most likely to find a match of someone of their own race or ethnicity," she pointed out. "And doctors are requesting donors in specific age ranges, from 18 to 44, and they request that more than 90 percent of the time."

Since its first annual event last year, Giving Tuesday has grown to include more than 8,000 partners in all 50 states.
