NMSU Considers Campus-Wide Smoking Ban

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Smoking on any New Mexico State University campus could become a thing of the past if a tobacco policy under consideration is approved. The Board of Regents is contemplating a measure that would ban tobacco use on all NMSU campuses.

Tilahun Adera, dean of the College of Health and Social Services, NMSU, said the smoking ban could help save lives.

"It is the number one preventable cause of death and diseases of various kinds," Adera said.

Adera estimated that as many as one in four NMSU students smokes.

The effort to become smoke-free is linked to a bill passed during the last legislative session. It asked all of New Mexico's public post-secondary educational institutions to come up with a tobacco-free policy by July 1, 2014. Adera said hundreds of universities around the U.S. have adopted similar policies, and urged NMSU to do the same.

"We do have a responsibility to promote this program as a public health program that would help the community, the population and this entire region," he said.

NMSU has about 29,000 students at its campuses in Alamogordo, Carlsbad, Grants and Las Cruces.
