AUSTIN, Texas - El University Medical Center of El Paso (Centro Médico Universitario de El Paso) y la agencia U.S. Customs and Border Protection (Protección de Aduanas y Fronteras de los EEUU), entre otros, son acusados en una demanda interpuesta a nombre de una mujer norteamericana que afirma haber sido sometida contra su voluntad a revisiones invasivas, incluyendo el examen rectal y vaginal.

La abogada Adriana Piñón, de ACLU of Texas, dice que el año pasado la mujer de 54 años regresaba al país cuando fue desvestida y revisada en un puesto de revisión fronterizo, luego esposada y llevada al centro médico, donde los doctores la examinaron contra su voluntad.

"La inspección llegó hasta los espacios más corporalmente íntimos que tiene una persona y fue una inspección injustificada, emblemática de los incidentes negativos que suceden en toda la frontera sur."

Después de seis horas de revisarla sin resultados, la mujer fue dejada en libertad sin cargos criminales, aunque luego el Centro Médico Universitario de El Paso le mandó cobrar $5,000. Por toda respuesta, la institución sólo comentó que su política es obtener el consentimiento de todos los pacientes que reciben servicios médicos. La Patrulla Fronteriza no comenta el litigio pendiente.

Esta demanda sólo es la más reciente de las relativas a los supuestos abusos que ocurren en la frontera de los Estados Unidos con México. Piñón asegura que sacaron el caso a la luz pública para que nadie tenga que volver a pasar por una pesadilla tan inhumana y brutal como ésta.

"Buscamos detener a los oficiales locales y federales y realmente creo que para nosotros es importante destacar que asegurar la frontera se ha vuelto una excusa para el abandono total de los principios constitucionales que protegen nuestra privacidad y dignidad... y basta significa basta."

Piñón termina diciendo que este tipo de casos muestra que hace falta una mejor capacitación en "U.S. Customs and Border Protection" cuando se trata del uso de la fuerza, conclusión a la que también llegó un reporte reciente de la Oficina del Inspector General.
