Tesla Supercharging Stations May Help AZ Tourism

PHOENIX - Arizona's tourism economy could get a boost in the New Year, courtesy of Tesla Motors. The maker of the popular electric vehicles has opened one of its super charging stations at Quartzsite, with six more coming soon around the state.

According to Ray Hagerman, CEO at Four Corners Economic Development, Tesla strategically locates the stations in areas near such amenities as restaurants and shopping centers, with the idea that Tesla owners will spend some money while waiting for their vehicles to charge.

"People plug in and they charge. An hour later the charge is done," Hagerman said. "But the idea is, it's within walking distance to go to dinner or something like that, or go do some shopping, and wait for the charge to get done."

Tesla super charging stations will open in the next few months near Buckeye, Flagstaff, Gila Bend, Kingman, Winslow and Yuma, with two more Arizona stations planned for later in 2014.

According to Tesla's website, there are now 52 super charging stations in the U.S., located along well-traveled highways. The company says the Tesla Model 'S' can get a half-charge within 20 minutes and can travel 300 miles on a single full charge. Hagerman said a big saving for electric car owners is the low cost, and in the case of Tesla, no cost, for refueling.

"That's what one of the benefits of being a Tesla owner is, if you use Tesla's super charging stations you never have to pay another nickel for fuel," he said.

With some Tesla vehicles priced at more than $100,000, Hagerman said, people traveling through Arizona most likely have extra money to spend at local retailers.
