Military Learn Writing Skills in Arizona Wilderness

PHOENIX - Current and former members of the military are eligible for an extended weekend writing retreat in the Arizona wilderness near Tucson.

The free workshop is a joint effort of the Veterans Writing Project and The Wilderness Society. Writing Project founder Ron Capps said the idea is to give people the opportunity for personal reflection and spiritual renewal away from the distractions of modern life.

"To get a group of people and just go out into the wilderness and turn all of those other distractions off and focus on a couple of ideas, focus on telling a story," he said.

Adult military family members also are invited, Capps said

Veterans, especially combat vets, tend to become isolated when returning to civilian life and college, Capps said, adding that writing is a way for them to reintegrate.

"Because the military's all about team cohesion - it's the mission of the team that's the most important - and all of a sudden, you're by yourself," he said. "You've always had the platoon, the squad, your buddy, your wingman. In many cases, that person doesn't exist anymore at the university. So, we're trying to beat the sense of isolation."

Mike Quigley, an Arizona representative for the Wilderness Society, said the Veterans Wilderness Writing Retreat is a pilot project that could be expanded across the nation and cited the connection between the military and America's wilderness areas.

"We've heard over the years from veterans that they fight for American principles, for our freedoms, our way of life, our ideals and our lands," Quigley said. "And we've also heard from them that it's the memory of a favorite trout stream, a mountain summit, a desert hike, that gives them comfort when they're deployed and also helps them reconnect when they return."

The Veterans Wilderness Writing Retreat is April 10-13. Participants will be responsible for their own camping gear and transportation to Tucson. The deadline to apply is March 7. Request an application at Mike_Quigley@tws.org.
