SALIDA, Colo. - Salida resident and business owner Jerry Mallett has been involved in land conservation for more than 50 years. Now owner of Boathouse Distillery, he continues to count on the protection of Colorado's land and water for his businesses' success.

That's why he joined at least 50 other business men and women in sending a letter to the U.S. Department of the Interior this week, asking Secretary Sally Jewell's department to follow through on oil and gas leasing reforms promised in 2010.

"Well, I hope she understands," Mallett said. "I mean, there's a phenomenal recreation component, there's no question about that, and probably the economic component is larger yet."

Development of Master Leasing Plans in western states and responsible development of renewable resources such as wind and solar were among the requests made in their letter to Jewell.

Ed Arnett, director of the Center for Responsible Energy Development for the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, said having a plan in place makes it easy to move forward.

"Master Lease Plans, we think, really provide a very powerful tool to avoid and minimize conflicts with wildlife and environmental issues on the front end," he said.

Mallett made the case that years without a big-picture approach already have jeopardized wildlife and land.

"We found the state land board was leasing for oil and gas in wetlands that they'd never seen on the ground," he said. "So this is going to give us a chance to really look at and come back to the idea of what we're going to be doing with this area."

Business owners who signed the letter include owners of outdoor outfitters and rafting companies. Nationwide, hunting and fishing generated more than $90 billion in economic activity in 2011 and supported more than 1.5 million jobs - which would place it 24th on the Fortune 500 list, if it were a corporation.
