It's National Farmers Market Week in Arizona, Nation

QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. - Fresh foods for consumers and revenue for Arizona's farmers are being promoted this week during "National Farmers' Market Week."

Korin Creech, who owns Desert Roots Farms in the Phoenix suburb of Queen Creek, said farmers' markets in the region are growing very fast and have become a major source of income for growers.

"It helps us to let the community know who we are and to 'purchase local.' And the local money staying within the state keeps us in business, as well as provides a certain amount of health benefit for the community," she said.

It appears Arizonans and Americans in general are spending more time and money at farmers' markets. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the number of farmers' markets in Arizona today is about 80, a number that has more than doubled in the past decade.

Creech said the rapidly growing popularity of high-quality fruits, vegetables, meats and grains offered at farmers' markets appears to be fueled by customers who want to know more about how their food is grown.

"You've got your farmers' market, where you know that it's locally grown and you can go visit the farmer," she said, "So, our consumers that come to the Gilbert market, and even the Phoenix market, they're the consumers that want to see where their food's coming from, and be introduced to the person growing it."

The number of farmers' markets also has nearly doubled across the nation, according to the USDA, from 4,600 in 2008 to nearly 8,200 last year.
