Poor Gas Mileage Drives VA Low in Energy-Efficiency Rankings

RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia ranks low for energy efficiency in a new report, mostly because of motorists' poor total gas mileage. Financial advice website Wallethub looks at home and transportation energy efficiency every year and ranks the states on how well they do.

Virginia came in sixth from the bottom this year. Wallethub spokesperson Jill Gonzalez says Virginians did badly, mostly because of the amount of gas they burn for the total miles they drive.

"They consumed about five billion gallons, and that's a far worse ratio than states like Georgia or North Carolina, that are really making the most of their miles," says Gonzalez.

Gonzalez says the rankings are based on two ratios, miles per gallon on the road, and a similar ratio for home energy use.

She explains home energy use is measured by taking the total energy used by a household and comparing it to degree-days, which show how much heating or cooling is needed in a particular area. She says the ranking for each state combines those two numbers.

"The first is going to be home energy efficiency and the second will be car energy efficiency and that'll look at the annual vehicle miles driven and the gallons of gasoline consumed," she says.

Gonzalez says Virginia did better on home energy use.

Nationwide, MPG numbers have risen significantly in recent years. But Gonzalez says some states, especially some Western states with long commutes, have done a much better job of increasing fuel efficiency on the road.

"California, Colorado really put an emphasis on hybrid cars and using high-occupancy vehicle carpool lanes. They seemed to make up for their size and commute, and really decrease their fuel-to-miles ratio," says Gonzalez.

October is National Energy Awareness Month. According to Wallethub, the average household spends more than $2,000 a year on energy bills. But it also says a typical dollar invested in efficiency brings more than twice that in returns.
