HARTFORD, Conn. - Go ahead and shop to your heart's content on Cyber Monday, but local nonprofits are hoping you will also take a moment to do some giving back tomorrow. Kate Mattias, executive director with NAMI-Connecticut, says her group is one of 10,000 around the globe that will participate in this year's #Giving Tuesday.

"The day itself was started in response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday," says Mattias. "#Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for people to give back to small nonprofits, which is one of the reasons NAMI Connecticut joined it."

This is the first year NAMI-Connecicut is participating, and Mattias says at some point during the day they will match donations up to $1,000. #Giving Tuesday was started by the 92nd Street Y in New York City along with UNICEF.

NAMI stands for the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and Mattias says you can go to their Connecticut website on #Giving Tuesday and help the organization continue to provide free education and counseling services statewide.

"One in four Americans is impacted by serious mental illness and NAMI provides help and hope to those individuals," she says. "As well as the people who are themselves living with mental illness - all of our programs in the community are free."

If you don't feel like you can afford to make a donation, you can still help spread the word about Giving Tuesday on social media. One way would be to take a photo and tag it with the hash tags unselfie and #Giving Tuesday and share it on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. The NAMI web address is namict.org
