Bridges Falling Down: Calling Attention to Human Needs on Tax Day

BOSTON – Peace activists in New England and the nation are using Tax Day to call attention to what they call excessive military spending that leaves the nation wanting when it comes to human needs.

Joseph Gerson, director of programs for the American Friends Service Committee for the northeast region, is the U.S. national coordinator for the Global Day of Action. He says the United States spends more money on the military as the next eight nations combined.

According to the National Priorities Project, taxpayers in the Commonwealth paid more than $16 billion for military spending in 2015.

"And, at the same time, you know our bridges are collapsing, our kids in many schools don't have the books or resources that they need, literally hundreds of thousands of former students are just weighted down with debt, and all of this undermines our real security," he states.

Gerson says the Global Day of Action actually involves a number of days this year, including an action last week in Boston to protest tax breaks the city gives to General Electric.

He says a protest will occur today at the Textron facility in Providence that produces cluster bombs.

Gerson says many Americans are unaware of what the Pentagon is spending on the biggest ticket items, notably nuclear weapons.

"The United States plans to spend a trillion dollars to build a new generation of nuclear weapons and their delivery systems when we know that even the detonation of a few of these weapons will lead to global cooling and ultimate famine killing about 2 billion people in the northern hemisphere," he stresses.

According to the National Priorities Project, the $16 billion that local taxpayers contributed to the Pentagon budget could have provided two million Pell Grants for college students, or paid for 200,000 police officers.
