Tomorrow's "Denim Day" Shows Support for NV Victims of Sexual Assault

LAS VEGAS - Advocates for victims of sexual assault across Nevada are asking people to wear jeans on Wednesday to support them on international Denim Day.

It's a protest that started 24 years ago in Italy, where a high-court judge freed an accused rapist, reasoning that because the 18-year-old victim had worn tight jeans, she must have helped her attacker remove them. Women in Parliament were horrified by the verdict and wore jeans in protest. Denim Day is now observed worldwide for Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April.

Daniele Dreitzer, executive director of the Rape Crisis Center in Las Vegas, said the problem is common and getting worse.

"It is such an under-reported crime," she said. "We saw, just within our organization, close to 700 individuals that went for the sexual-assault exam in 2015, which was a significant increase from the previous year."

The Rape Crisis Center is expecting 200 people at a community fashion show and luncheon on Wednesday to raise awareness.

Ashlyn Gray, CARE coordinator at the Jean Nidetch Women's Center at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, said the victim-blaming culture needs to change.

"Sexual assault is the only crime where questions - like, 'What were you wearing? What were you doing there? Why did you drink that? Why were you with those people? - are directed at the victim," she said. "So, asking these questions just further internalizes the shame and guilt that comes with being a victim of sexual assault."

A number of downtown Las Vegas businesses are participating, by encouraging their employees to wear denim and passing out buttons that say, "Ask Me about Denim Day."

More information is online at denimdayinfo.org and rcclv.org. A 24-hour Rape Crisis hotline is at 702-366-1640.
