Nevadans Hope for Answers on Public Lands at Debate

LAS VEGAS - Ownership of public lands hasn't come up in the first two presidential debates, but groups across the political spectrum in Nevada are hoping that will change at tonight's third and final matchup at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

The Commission on Presidential Debates has released the six main issues to be addressed: entitlement programs and debt, immigration, the Supreme Court, the economy, foreign policy and the fitness of each candidate for the nation's highest office. But Andy Maggi, executive director of the Nevada Conservation League and Education Fund, said the Silver State is the perfect venue to ask about proposals to transfer federal land to state control.

"Nevada's been at the center of the national conversation around public lands for the last few years," he said. "We're the home of the Bundys. We've had armed conflict here on the ground, and been at the center of that discussion around public-land seizures."

Maggi would like the candidates to commit to keeping public lands in federal hands rather than handing them over to the states, which he said could then sell them off to private interests.

David Jenkins, president of Conservatives for Responsible Stewardship, said it's a misconception that Republicans in the West are against public-land protections or that they support fossil fuels over renewable energy. However, he said he wants to hear both candidates take a stand on these issues.

"You know, the reality is our protected public lands out West are popular across all political divides," he said. "They're popular with Republicans just as much as they are with Independents and Democrats."

According to an Outdoor Industry Association poll, 77 percent of voters in Nevada believe public lands, waters and wildlife are important in their voting decisions.
