NASHVILLE, Tenn. – They don't call us the Volunteer State for nothing. Tennessee ranks fourth in the country when it comes to the percentage of donated income to charities, and ranks 13th overall in a list of the country's Most Charitable States. The data, compiled by survey giant WalletHub, also ranked the state high when it comes to people offering their time and talent.

Jennifer Chalos, lead consultant with the Center for Nonprofit Management in Nashville, isn't surprised by the recognition.

"Having the name Volunteer State certainly reminds us all too that giving doesn't have to be cash, it's something that we can give of ourselves, no matter what, by giving our time,"she said.

Tuesday, Tennesseans have one more chance to prove their generosity with #GivingTuesday. In its fifth year, the national effort encourages people to give of their time and resources to nonprofits. Last year, more than 700,000 people raised $116 million in more than 70 countries on the designated day.

Chalos says the money raised during the holidays helps sustain nonprofits throughout the year.

"#GivingTuesday raises the profile for all nonprofits to get out there and remind people that while they're thinking about spending online on Cyber Monday, and thinking about shopping on Black Friday and even Small Business Saturday, that nonprofits thrive and benefit from individual support," she explained.

To make sure you're donating to a reputable charity, websites such as GuideStar give you information on the money raised and how it is used for registered nonprofits.
