TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Hoy el movimiento obrero recuerda a trabajadoras y trabajadores de todo el planeta que murieron o resultaron heridos en sus trabajos. Todos los estados, como Florida, planean reabrir durante la pandemia del Coronavirus. A raíz del Día del Trabajador, los defensores están haciendo un llamado para que haya protecciones más estrictas para los trabajadores que laboran en contacto con el exterior, y para quienes se les regresa de inmediato a sus labores.

El Dr. Rich Templin, director de política y de políticas públicas de Florida AFL-CIO, dice que sabiendo qué tan mortal es el COVID-19, los trabajadores no debieran tener que pagar el precio final por tratar de alimentar a sus familias.

"Es el orden establecido para orillar a las empresas a que se aseguran de que esos trabajadores tienen las políticas básicas y el equipo necesarios para asegurar que no pesquen el virus y, peor aún, que lo lleven a casa a sus familias."

En la Florida la orden de permanecer en casa, de principios de este mes, expira el jueves. El Gobernador Ron DeSantis todavía tiene que aportar datos sobre la reapertura de los negocios cerrados en el estado.

Mientras tanto se reporta que su problemático sistema de desempleo ignora miles de solicitudes de empleo aparentemente elegibles.

Templin destaca que mientras los trabajadores del sector privado tienen protecciones federales bajo la OSHA, Administración Ocupacional de Seguridad y Salud ("Occupatioinal Safety and Health Administration"), los trabajadores del sector público de Florida están sin reglas similares debido a que el Gobernador Jeb Bush desmanteló del departamento de trabajo del estado.

"Nuestro país no estaba preparado para esta pandemia en lo que toca a nuestra fuera laboral. Número 2, aquí en Florida, si bien lo intentamos año con año, necesitamos tener algún tipo de normas sanitarias básicas y hacer que las cumplan los trabajadores de nuestro sector público."

Templin dice que estos parámetros federales deberían ser replicados cuando los trabajadores sean llamados de nuevo a su trabajo.
