AUSTIN, Texas -- La pandemia ha ilustrado que toda escuela necesita un acceso remoto del Siglo 21 para banda ancha, de acuerdo a Connected Nation Texas (Nación Conectada Texas).

La Directora del Programa Estatal, Jennifer Harris, dice que el aprendizaje a distancia funciona cuando se hacen inversiones en ancho de banda residencial, en escuelas y bibliotecas. Agrega que al principio de la pandemia muchos hogares tenían teléfonos celulares, pero no podían pagar o decidieron no tener una "laptop" o una tableta en su hogar.

"Bueno, como carambas vas a escribir un articulo en un celular; entonces nos presentamos en las escuelas en linea y estan batallando porque aunque pueden pagar internet y lo tienen, no tienen los dispositivos."

La Comisión Federal de Comunicadiones (Federal Communications Commission) dice que el 321% de los Tejanos rurales carecen de acceso a internet de alta velocidad, en contaste con sólo 2.6% en las áreas urbanas. De hecho, de los 330 mil hogares sin ancho de banda, el 90% vive en el Texas rural.

Harris dice que mucha gente en la parte rural de Texas no puede contratar ancho de banda porque no hay servicio físico.

"Nuestros mapas mas recientes muestran que casi un millon de tejanos no tienen acceso fisico a la banda ancha de minima velocidad definida por la Comision Federal de Comunicaciones."

Harris dice que no son sólo estudiantes, sino familias, negocios y comunidades de Texas quienes quedan fuera de las oportunidades por no tener acceso a recursos que muchos otros disfrutan en todo el país.
