RALEIGH, N.C. -- In North Carolina, yet-to-be-counted absentee and provisional ballots have left presidential election results in limbo.

Alissa Ellis, advocacy director for the group Democracy North Carolina, said election officials need time to do their jobs and process the around 117,000 absentee ballots expected to arrive at county clerks' offices between now and Nov. 12.

"And that's where we're assured of the transparency of the election and that every vote counts," Ellis asserted. "Including absentee ballots that are sent by the correct postmark day on Election Day but received after Election Day."

She added voters have done their jobs, turning out in record numbers.

More than 890,000 voters cast ballots in North Carolina on Election Day, along with 4.5 million who chose to vote early, and more than 950,000 residents who cast their vote by mail.

Ellis stressed the winner of North Carolina's fifteen electoral votes for president may not be known until Nov. 13, also known as the "Day of Canvass."

"It is really important for voters to manage their expectations around election results," Ellis urged. "Because, the fact of the matter is, that North Carolina election results are certified during canvass."

On Nov. 13, county boards of elections will compile results from all precincts and officially report the outcome of the election within that county.

Following the county canvass announcements, the State Board of Elections will approve the official election results.
