Programa de subsidio busca mejorías para financiar comunidades de CA

LOS ÁNGELES -- A partir de hoy, los gobiernos locales y las organizaciones sin fines de lucro de todo California tendrán la oportunidad de solicitar subsidios de AARP, para financiar proyectos que hagan que sus áreas sean más habitables.

La quinta beca anual Community Challenge está aceptando solicitudes desde ahora y hasta el 14 de abril.

Con la organización no lucrativa Los Angeles River State Park Partners, Jenny Aleman-Zometa, directora de programas, dice que un subsidio de $15 mil en 2020 financió la Iniciativa de Salud en Chinatown, la cual entregó bolsas de productos una vez al mes, el verano pasado y durante el otoño en el Parque Histórico Estatal de Los Ángeles.

"Tuvimos una gran participacion. Hubo mas gente de la que realmente podiamos servir. Pudimos repartir alrededor de 100 bolsas durante cada evento y, de hecho, tuvimos que rechazar a la gente. El evento se difundio de boca en boca."

El programa de subsidios busca financiar proyectos para crear lugares públicos vibrantes, para mejorar el transporte o la vivienda, aumentar el compromiso cívico, y apoyar a la recuperación de la pandemia, también para que las comunidades sean más inclusivas.

Jana Schwartz, planificadora para adultos de la organización sin fines de lucro Circulate San Diego, dice que el año pasado, su grupo usó su subsidio de 15 mil dólares para traducir su sitio web y folletos de transporte público al árabe.

El programa está destinado para atraer a más personas de la gran comunidad iraquí-estadounidense de El Cajon para que utilicen el sistema de trolebuses y autobuses.

"Queremos poder brindar acceso a las actividades en San Diego. Pero muchos, no saben mucho mas alla de El Cajon, porque la educacion y la comprension no estaban ahi. Entonces, esta oportunidad de beca fue tremenda para poder crear esos recursos."

2021 es el quinto año en acción del programa. Para los grupos que estén interesados, la solicitud está en línea en AARP.org/CommunityChallenge.
