Hoy podría llegar una decisión sobre la candidatura de Nevada para convertirse en el primer estado del país en celebrar unas primarias demócratas en 2024.

El Comité Nacional Demócrata se está reuniendo para considerar si se cambia el orden tradicional: Iowa, luego New Hampshire y después Carolina del Sur.

Judith Whitmer, presidenta del Partido Demócrata del Estado de Nevada, dice que Nevada entregó el Senado a los demócratas en las elecciones de mitad de período, y encaja en el proyecto como un estado pequeño y diverso que se presta para la política y donde los candidatos deben comprometerse con los votantes en persona.

"Los criterios son diversidad y competitividad," asegura Whitmer. "Y también tiene que estar en un mercado de medios de comunicación que no esté tan sobrevalorado como para que los candidatos no puedan pagarlo al principio."

Se espera que el Partido Republicano de Nevada celebre sus primarias el mismo día que los demócratas. El gobernador Steve Sisolak firmó el año pasado una ley que instituye las primarias en todo el estado, sustituyendo el antiguo sistema de designación de candidatos. No ha surgido ninguna oposición significativa en el estado, pero varios otros estados compiten por ser los primeros en el calendario de primarias, como Michigan, Minnesota y New Hampshire.

Emmanuelle Leal es la directora de comunicaciones de Somos Votantes en Las Vegas, un grupo que se enfoca en el voto latino.

"El país no se parece a Iowa. El país no se parece a New Hampshire," dice Leal. "El país se parece a Nevada: un estado con una población diversa de personas de color, sindicatos, con familias rurales y urbanas."

Leal señala que el estado elegido para ir primero atraerá una gran cantidad de atención nacional e influencia política y verá una afluencia de millones en gastos relacionados con las elecciones.
