North Dakota's biggest county is ushering in some changes for the 2024 election.

Local leaders say the moves are largely based on feedback from voters in the county's pursuit to make civic engagement an easier process. The Cass County Commission has approved the changes, which include adding more vote centers and expanding hours for early voting.

Craig Steingaard, elections administrator for Cass County, said they heard voters' concerns about issues like longer lines in the 2022 elections, and wanted voters to know they take their critiques seriously.

"It's really important to be aware of what our voters are thinking as far as, 'Well, how easy was it for us to vote?'" Steingaard explained. "How is the county going to be able to adjust and then adapt to what the voter population actually is saying?"

For expanded early voting, the days have now been adjusted to run from Tuesday through Saturday, instead of Monday through Friday in previous elections. And early voting sites will now be open a little later, until 7 p.m. on weeknights. Officials said it should accommodate people with busy schedules.

The changes come in an era where local election officials are under more scrutiny due to disinformation from some political groups and their followers. Steingaard stressed the changes they're making come with a lot of careful planning.

"Whether it is, you know, something we can fix or not fix, the first thing that we fall back to is, well OK, here's what the law said," Steingaard noted. "What are we actually allowed to do, and what are we not allowed to do?"

One of the other approved changes involves the purchase of on-demand paper ballot printers, because of shortage issues some voter centers previously dealt with. Officials emphasized key storage protocols will be followed to ensure they're not tampered with.
