Hoy es el último día para expresar su opinión sobre las normas de emisiones de vehículos propuestas por la E-P-A.

Las nuevas normas se aplicarán progresivamente a los vehículos ligeros y medios a partir del modelo del año 2027. La idea es reducir las emisiones del tubo de escape y acelerar la transición a vehículos de emisiones cero.

El actor y activista conservacionista Ed Begley Junior acaba de participar en el Route Zero Relay, que recorrió el país en vehículos eléctricos para concienciar a los consumidores.

"Hay mucha recarga ahora," asegura Begley. "Pero con la ley de infraestructuras, va a haber una recarga rápida mucho más robusta. Y creo que eso va a marcar una gran diferencia en la toma de decisiones de la gente, para que decidan optar por la electricidad."

Quienes se oponen a los estándares de automóviles limpios a largo plazo argumentan que son costosos y podrían aumentar los precios de los vehículos, afirmación que los grupos conservacionistas cuestionan. Los datos de la E-P-A muestran que el sector del transporte representa el 27% de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, la fuente más grande y de más rápido crecimiento en los EE. UU.

Cara Cook trabaja en la Alianza de Enfermeras por un Medio Ambiente Sano, organización asociada al Route Zero Relay. Ella afirma que las emisiones de carbono impulsan el cambio climático y provocan toda una serie de problemas de salud.

"Así que estamos viendo más días de calor extremo, días de mala calidad del aire, más fenómenos meteorológicos extremos," puntualiza Cook. "Los días de mucho calor agravan enfermedades crónicas como las cardiacas o las respiratorias. Los días de mala calidad del aire provocan muertes prematuras, sobre todo por el humo de los incendios forestales."

Se aceptarán comentarios públicos hasta medianoche en regulations.gov. Los defensores esperan que la E-P-A publique una norma definitiva a finales de año.
