Los asistentes de atención domiciliaria en el estado de Washington están viendo los beneficios de la cobertura médica para sus hijos. Los miembros del SEIU 775 que cuidan a personas en el hogar ahora tienen acceso a atención médica para sus dependientes. Para la cuidadora Dani Rice, esto es un gran acontecimiento. Su hijo no tuvo seguro médico durante cinco años porque era inasequible para Rice y su marido. Ella dice que hubo momentos aterradores durante ese tiempo, incluso cuando regresó a casa de la escuela con la nariz ensangrentada.

"Ahora que tenemos seguro médico, es un gran alivio para nosotros porque el COVID no va a desaparecer y mi hijo no se está volviendo menos torpe, [sonríe]" y comenta la entrevistada.

Rice también tiene cobertura para su hijo menor. Los cuidadores a domicilio que trabajan al menos 120 horas al mes tienen acceso a cobertura médica y dental para niños por $ 100 al mes. Hasta ahora se han inscrito en el programa unos 1.400 niños.

Adam Glickman de SEIU 775 agrega que el sindicato escuchó de los miembros que se trataba de una necesidad apremiante.

"Parecía que se estaba volviendo cada vez más difícil encontrar médicos, dentistas, obtener realmente una buena cobertura bajo Apple Health, bajo Medicaid," expresó Glickman.

Rice indica que esto es importante porque muchas personas en la industria son padres.

"La gran mayoría de nosotros estamos al borde del abismo en el que ya no calificamos para recibir asistencia, o necesitamos ayuda con un seguro médico asequible. Y por eso, esto ha sido un gran beneficio para todos," insistió además Rice.
