El Año de Barry: Homenajes por sus 20 años de voluntariado en Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – El más alto honor que otorga la AARP cada año por trabajo de voluntariado, fue ganado este año por el cantautor Barry Coggins de Nashville. Coggins ha dado su tiempo al programa “Meals on Wheels” (Comidas sobre Ruedas) durante más de 20 años, tiempo en el que ha entregado un estimado de 10 mil comidas con su debida guarnición de atentos cuidados.

Adrienne Newman, del grupo Fifty Forward, nominó a Coggins para el Tennessee Andrus Asard for Community Service (Premio Andrus de Tennessee al Servicio Comunitario) 2014, que finalmente recibió. Newman le reconoce a Coggins por su dedicación y trabajo en el programa "Meals on Wheels" y por marcar una diferencia real en la vida de otros, día tras día por más de dos décadas.

"No sólo cumple. También supervisa. A veces trae regalos. Otras veces da lo que se requiera. Una mujer nos platicó que cuando él llega, no duda en pedirle que cambie un foco, que saque la basura o que haga lo que ella necesite."

Newman agrega que, además de caminar la milla extra por sus clientes de Meals on Wheels, Coggins coordina el torneo anual de golf, evento que ha recaudado más de 30 mil dólares desde sus inicios.

"Y creo que una de las cosas que Barry quisiera que yo diga es que aunque le lleva mucha alegría a la gente, él recibe lo mismo de vuelta - y que hay maneras muy sencillas en las que uno puede hacer la diferencia."

Los Premios Andrus, los más prestigiados y notorios del estado, los otorga la AARP como homenaje al trabajo comunitario voluntario. La Mención Honorífica de este año fue para Rita Atkins, de Franklin and Lillie St. Clair, de Cordova.
