Boise, ID – Praising the Lord can include actions as simple as putting compact fluorescent bulbs in every light fixture. Faith groups are taking conservation messages to heart, in Idaho and across the country, as part of the new wave of "spiritually motivated" environmental actions.

The conservation ideas and efforts of religious organizations in every state are documented in a new report by the Sierra Club. Pastor Tri Robinson, of Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Boise, says it's the responsibility of every person of faith to take environmental stewardship seriously.

"Realizing the biblical mandate and the responsibility for creation, it really is the church taking responsibility for creation's care."

Robinson's church is featured in the report. The congregation participates in a recycling program, helps coordinate stream restoration projects, and holds seminars about sustainable living. Robinson admits some church leaders are uncomfortable talking about environmental issues because the topic has been politicized, but in his view, caring for resources is an important part of community life.

Sierra Club Faith Partnerships Coordinator, Lyndsay Moseley, says the report shows the many ways that churches have emerged as leaders on environmental issues, big and small.

"Everything from organizing community bike rides, to a church in Nevada putting solar panels on their rooftop, to community gardening initiatives."

The report, "Faith in Action," can be viewed online at www.sierraclub.org.
