Buyer Beware: “Greenwashing” Tricks Arizona Consumers

PHOENIX - "Buyer beware" is the name of the game when it comes to deciphering labels and advertising claims for "green" products, according to Jason Dunlop, who is a board member with the U.S. Green Building Council. The group has been holding educational sessions to let people know that there's a marketing free-for-all going on when it comes to these types of products and services, because the sector is so profitable.

"As consumers, we're kind of flooded with these 'green,' quote - unquote, products that are going to make us healthy and feel better, and are safe for our children and our pets. We have quite a task to consider the label."

Dunlop says some organizations are trying to clear up the confusion for consumers, such as Consumers Union and I-SEAL. Both groups offer online databases to verify eco-claims, and others are working to educate advertisers and companies.

"For a marketer to fib or to lie about it, you know; we hate the thought of that, but it may not always be intentional. Sometimes, they may not understand themselves what it is they're saying."

Dunlop advises caution with words and phrases like "LEED-certified," "natural," and "eco-friendly," which he says can be misleading. Such false labels and claims are often called "greenwashing." The Federal Trade Commission has issued statements to discourage companies from misleading consumers on the topic, but Dunlop says it's still rampant.
