CDC: Fewer Teen Moms in Oregon

Monday, December 12, 2011

PORTLAND, Ore. - The percentage of births to teen moms in Oregon dropped almost a full point from 2009 to 2010, from 8.7 percent to 7.7 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The decrease coincides with findings of a national survey by Planned Parenthood in which most parents - 82 percent - say they are discussing sexuality with their kids.

In Oregon, the organization also supports comprehensive sex education in the schools and other efforts, like the Teen Outreach Program (TOP). Camelia Hison with Planned Parenthood Columbia-Willamette says TOP focuses on young people who are at risk not only for unintended pregnancy, but for dropping out of school.

"It's really increasing their skills in a number of different topics, such as values, communication, decision-making, sexual health and, of course, relationships - really equipping them with the tools they need to stay healthy and to make good decisions for themselves."

Hison says TOP is new to Oregon, but already serves about 1,000 kids. In states where schools are active in the program, suspensions, failing grades and teen pregnancies have all dropped more than 50 percent among the participating students.

Oregon's teen birth rate is now significantly lower than the national rate of 9.3 percent. Hison says the trend is positive, although teen births nationwide continue to be a concern.

"Too many teens are still getting pregnant - 750,000 teens become pregnant every year. That number is still unacceptably high. Young people need comprehensive, medically accurate, age-appropriate sexuality education to prevent unintended pregnancy and to keep them healthy and safe."

Oregon has progressive sex education guidelines for schools, she adds, but funding cuts have meant that not all of them offer it as part of their health curriculum. According to the CDC, the lowest teen birth rates are in Massachusetts and New Jersey, at just under 5.5 percent.

The CDC birth statistics are online at cdc.gov.
