Milwaukee, WI - Thousands of people in the Gulf Coast region will be spending their second Christmas in a FEMA trailer with limited medical and school services. Leaders of Wisconsin relief efforts say there's still a lot of work to be done. The Archdiocese of Milwaukee is helping Katrina victims rebuild their homes in Mississippi. Retired Catholic priest Father Paul Esser is running the effort.

"Just in Hancock County alone, which is where Bay St. Louis is in Mississippi, there are still 10,000 people living in FEMA trailers. Their plight is really dire. We are trying to use our money and our volunteer efforts to buy wallboard (and building supplies) to help them actually rebuild their home if that's what they are going to do."

Father Esser is disappointed that recovery has gone so slowly. He urges charities and government at all levels to be better prepared for disasters.

At the national level, the Children's Defense Fund (CDF) is working to draw attention to children still suffering after Katrina. Malaak Compton-Rock, wife of comedian Chris Rock, participated in a recent CDF visit to New Orleans, and she says the country can't give up on the kids there.

"Children left in Louisiana are trying to go to school, trying to feed themselves and being raised by older sisters or by young aunts."

The latest Katrina recovery report is online at www.brookings.edu.
