Public News Service is a national public interest newswire.  We find and report public interest stories that need to be told, often from historically marginalized voices. We distribute print and broadcast stories to other local media outlets across a state, region, or the entire country. Reaching far beyond the traditional news bubble, more than 7 million people a day hear or read these stories through a network of state news services. We are a certified Benefit corporation with 10% set aside for employee ownership.

Report on Critical Issues:  Public News Service has work for experienced news producers/reporters who are passionate about justice and the important issues of the day.  Currently, we have openings for several people with extensive spot news writing, newscast writing, on-air reporting and skilled digital sound editing.

 Successful candidates generally have a minimum of five years of broadcast news writing/voicing/digital recording & editing experience. *We have hired exceptional entry-level candidates with less experience and stellar references.* In all cases, please only apply if you have strong digital sound recording and editing skills and already have the ability to record, voice and edit from your virtual office.


  • 3-5 years of experience working in a fast-paced news environment (commercial media and wire service work preferred) *Exceptions as noted above.*
  • Demonstrated expertise with digital interviewing/voicing/recording and editing
  • Home recording ability, including high comfort with technology and working experience with various software

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills: ability to participate in the news service social media channels and the ability to coordinate intense levels of e-mail correspondence and phone calls

  • Familiarity with the public interest news environment, cultural trends, and emerging issues
  • Sense of humor and innovative spirit a definite plus
  • Proven success building relationships and creating productive partnerships.
  • Experience working within a virtual team


Standard full-time employment with required qualifications is $60,000 annually with 100% health insurance, 3% Simple IRA match, family leave and generous Paid Time Off policy. *Pay is commensurate with experience for entry-level candidates. Additional compensation may be available depending on geographic cost of living. Very infrequent travel may be required.
