A nationwide study released today by Wake Forest University researchers finds 70 percent of parents with guns aren't storing them safely. Dr. Jonathan Groner, surgical director of the pediatric intensive care unit at Ohio State and trauma director at the Children's Hospital in Columbus says a few simple firearm precautions can keep kids from showing up at his hospital.

"There is no greater tragedy in what I see than firearm death in a child, because it's so preventable. The way to store firearms safely exists."

Dr. Groner warns that simply keeping firearms in closets, on top of refrigerators, or other out-of-the-way places isn't enough to keep them out of the hands of inquisitive kids. Parents need to go the extra mile to make sure children aren't handling guns.

"We would not give a six-year-old car keys, I wouldn't let a 6-year-old have access to a handgun. Unintentional firearm deaths can be prevented, and if it's safely locked and stored, the risk of injury to children is very small."

Study authors recommend gun locks, keeping the firearms unloaded and storing ammunition separately.
