It's been a busy disaster season around the globe, which inevitably means a hectic time for relief workers. This month, Hurricane Dean and a major earthquake in Peru are the calls to action for Mercy Corps, a humanitarian aid organization with an office in Cambridge. Mercy Corps' relief crews are on their way to the Yucatan Peninsula, where the hurricane cut electricity and could cause life-threatening floods; other aid teams already are working in Peru, where an earthquake of 7.9 magnitude rocked the coast last week.

Mercy Corps' Director of Health Programs Carlos Cardenas is in Peru, where he says they're handing out necessities -- water purification tablets, tents, tools, and first-aid kits -- mostly to the smaller communities.

"There are a number of smaller villages surrounding these larger cities that don't get the same kind of attention that the big cities get."

To distribute aid more quickly, Mercy Corps is teaming up with a Washington, D.C.-based group, Partners of the Americas, in both Peru and the Yucatan Peninsula. Cardenas says rebuilding the Peruvian communities won't be a quick job.

"Some of the structures in these locations are broken down, including the water systems and some of the schools, and these are all recovery efforts that will take place over the next couple weeks."

The earthquake killed more than 500 people, and displaced 80,000. Hurricane Dean has been blamed for 13 deaths.
