NH House to Vote on Impeaching Bush and Cheney

Concord, NH - A bid to impeach President Bush and Vice President Cheney will go before the New Hampshire House of Representatives in March.

The resolution was put forward by Rep. Betty Hall. The Brookline Democrat's legislation charges Bush and Cheney with high crimes and misdemeanors in connection with warrantless wiretaps, holding suspects without due process, and the invasion of Iraq. The measure will face a floor fight in the House after getting a negative recommendation on an 11-5 vote in the State-Federal Relations Committee this week.

Hall says the real question for the legislature is whether the administration's actions meet the standards for impeachment set out in the U.S. Constitution.

"I personally think so, and I'm hoping the other members of the House would like to suggest that Congress see if Congress thinks that."

Hall says Congress must act in order to establish precedents for future administrations as to what is and isn't an impeachable offense. She adds that the two most recent impeachment efforts, against presidents Clinton and Nixon, failed to set that standard.

Even though less than a year remains in the Bush-Cheney administration, Hall believes the nation still needs the impeachment process.

"This kind of investigation can be completed in a reasonable amount of time, and it will act like a surgical cleansing of our body politic."

Leaders of the New Hampshire House have not yet set a date for the full debate.
