Tips for MT to Take the Burn out of Record Gas Prices

Monday, April 7, 2008

Helena, MT - Montana has set a new record, and it's nothing worth celebrating. Gas prices reached $3.30 a gallon over the weekend, according to American Automobile Association, and that's an all-time high.

For those who want to fight back, Bob Schildgen, also known as "Mr. Green," a columnist for the Sierra Club magazine, says families can noticeably stretch their fuel budgets and reduce pollution with a little planning, making fewer car trips. He also advises to slow down, and notes that some of the big trucking companies are giving their drivers the same advice.

"Also, watch your tires and keep them properly inflated, make sure your car is well-tuned, and don't sit around idling. Those are the serious conservation measures."

He says it also pays to check the cargo in your trunk, because removing excess weight improves gas mileage. Schildgen says there's really no need to invest in devices meant to boost gas mileage, because small changes in driving habits are the most effective methods for saving cash.

"We sometimes put too much faith in a new gadget, or a new engine, thinking that's going to save us money, but the very first thing we should do is simply using less fuel."

Average gas prices in Montana are about fifty cents more than they were a year ago. More of "Mr. Green's" tips are available on the Sierra Club Web site: www.sierraclub.org.
