West Coast Relief Group Helps China Earthquake Survivors

A West Coast humanitarian group continues to deliver lifesaving supplies to earthquake survivors in southwestern China, even as aftershocks continued through the weekend. Emergency response workers from Mercy Corps have been in the Szechuan province since last week.

Roger Burks, with the group, says Mercy Corps has been working with local Chinese agencies to hit the ground running.

"They're the people who know best how to meet the needs of survivors, their families and communities. We partner with them to get on the ground quickly, assess needs and start the relief operations."

Burks says it has been an emotional time for the Mercy Corps emergency response team witnessing the devastation.

"There is a lot of uncertainty and a lot of things are on hold. The earthquake victims have great immediate needs, and our people are working hard to meet those needs, while also planning how to move to the next stage of disaster relief."

Burks says because they are concerned about the psychological needs of the youngest survivors, Mercy Corps is developing a Comfort for Kids program to help children and caregivers cope with the tremendous loss. The Chinese government estimates the death toll could reach 50,000 people.
