Memphis, TN - Activists throughout Memphis are calling for an end to what they consider to be the status quo in Washington, D.C. and Tennessee. At the "Bands Not Bombs" music festival this Saturday, social action groups from the area plan to challenge lawmakers to make a shift away from corporate interests toward funding people's needs.

Jacob Flowers, executive director of the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center, says the current economic downturn is having a tremendous impact on communities in Memphis.

"Memphis is the second most-violent city in this country. We have abnormally high rates of poverty and infant mortality."

The festival will also highlight efforts to end the war in Iraq. Tennessee's Senators are currently at odds over a withdrawal strategy: Senator Lamar Alexander is calling for an immediate reduction in troops, while Senator Bob Corker, like the Bush administration, is encouraging Congress to wait until General David Petraeus' status report in September.

Flowers believes it's time elected representatives listened to their constituents.

"It has become increasingly obvious over the past five years of bloodshed that the American public is staunchly opposed to the continued occupation of Iraq."

Flowers hopes a new administration will focus on issues important to working families, such as adequate health care and a living wage.

Details of the "Bands Not Bombs" festival are available on the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center Web site at midsouthpeace.org.
