Child Gun Death Numbers Up Again In North Dakota

Wednesday, June 11, 2008

Washington, D.C. – Just over 3,000 U.S. teenagers and children died in 2005 from firearms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the first increase in gun deaths in that age group in more than a decade. In North Dakota the numbers have been climbing for three years in a row, with 11 children killed in that single year.

Susan Gates with the Children's Defense Fund analyzed the statistics.

"It is absolutely unacceptable that in this country we lose eight children every day to gun violence."

The CDF issued a report based on the data, recommending better gun safety laws, more safety education and a focus on helping kids resolve disputes without violence.

Ladd Everitt with the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence believes there's a good role for new laws because guns are one of the only consumer items with absolutely no federal oversight for quality and safety.

"So, when these guns roll off the manufacturing lines, they have zero standards that they have to meet with the Consumer Product Safety Commission."

Gun rights groups warn against new gun laws, saying they infringe on the constitutional right to bear arms.

Most of those children killed by firearms in 2005 died from suicide, and in North Dakota, suicide is the second-leading cause of death in that age group.
