Looking Down the Barrel of a Tragic Trend: Child Gun Deaths Up in MI, Nation

Lansing, MI – Michigan lost 92 young people to firearms-related violence and accidents in 2005, with a nationwide total that year of more than 3,000. It is the first year the national numbers have increased since 1994, according to a new Children's Defense Fund report, based on statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ladd Everitt with the Coalition To Stop Gun Violence says access to guns is one of the key factors and, sadly, another is simply life in America.

"We live in a culture that glamorizes guns. So, it is very natural for children to be fascinated by guns, and I think that's a real challenge with gun education."

The CDF proposes reducing gun-related deaths among young people by reducing the number of guns and the access to them. But gun control opponents argue additional regulations create unnecessary burdens on law-abiding citizens and may infringe upon their constitutional rights.

Everitt says that improving the design of new guns could reduce the number of deaths while preserving gun rights for adults.

"There is a lot of room for improvement in terms of the way we manufacture guns in order to make them tamper-resistant to children."
