CDC: Ohio Child Gun Violence Deaths Rising

Toledo, OH – More than 100 Ohio children died in a single year because of gunshots, according to the latest statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And an analysis of the numbers by the Children's Defense Fund, released today, shows the number of deaths has been rising for three years in a row, reflecting a nationwide trend that has seen more than 3,000 children die in a year.

Toby Hoover with the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence says if guns were secure, many deaths would not have happened.

"There simply is no excuse for a young person getting a hold of a firearm without an adult around. There is no excuse. We have to hold the adults accountable for this."

Many factors are involved in gun-related deaths, but Hoover says access to guns is one of the easiest to control. The CDF report recommends what it calls common-sense gun safety measures, and promotion of non-violent values and conflict resolution training for young people. Gun rights groups are wary of new gun laws, saying they would likely infringe on the constitutional right to bear arms.

While Hoover likes the idea of new laws, she believes a lot can be done on the personal-responsibility front.

"Firearm owners out there are going to have to step up to the plate and say, 'Well, if we want to save our children, we're going to have to do our part.'"
