Chicago, IL - The term "food for thought" takes on a spiritual meaning for the Chicago-based group Faith in Place. Supporting sustainable agriculture - by considering where food comes from and how it was produced - is one aspect of the growing faith-based environmental movement, according to a report released today by the Sierra Club.

Faith in Place is among the groups whose work is highlighted in the report. The Reverend Clare Butterfield, who founded the organization, works with churches and neighborhoods to explain the connection between faith, caring for the environment, and social justice.

"You will inevitably cause some destruction by asserting the right to support your own life, but you want to make the impact of that destruction as small as possible."

For example, in Butterfield's view, producing food with as few chemicals as possible is one way to show love for all people.

"Maybe, as moral people, if we can afford to pay for food that hasn't caused any other human being to expose themselves to poison, that's a decision we need to make."

The report, called "Faith In Action," showcases churches that champion conservation and environmental issues in ways that are as diverse as their beliefs and congregation members. Some have installed solar energy panels on church rooftops; others tend community gardens; Christian university students choose to pay higher fees so their campus can be powered entirely by wind energy. The full report is available online, at www.sierraclub.org.
