"Last Shot" To Comment On Guns In Ohio National Parks
Monday, June 30, 2008
Washington, D.C. – Gun rules are being "targeted" in national parks, and today is the last chance for the public to take aim. The comment period ends at midnight tonight on a proposed rule change that could allow loaded, concealed weapons in the parks. Opponents say there is no need for anyone to bring a gun to places like Cuyahoga National Park outside Akron.
Bryan Faehner is a former park ranger now with the National Parks Conservation Association.
"It's actually a very confusing proposal. Currently you've got one very consistent and uniform regulation: You can have a gun, but it just has to be unloaded and put away."
Proponents of the new gun plan say it's a Second Amendment issue. Opponents include the seven surviving former National Park Service directors.
Faehner contends that following state gun laws for national parks, as proposed in the rule change, will be a nightmare for everyone involved because every state is different, and many national parks cross state lines.
"How this would play out is very cumbersome and very complex and confusing for park rangers and park visitors."
Comments on the rule can be submitted until midnight online at www.npca.org.
