OR Group Helps Georgians Displaced by War

Portland, OR - Both sides have agreed to a tenuous ceasefire, but the death toll has topped 2,000 in the conflict between Russia and the formerly-Soviet Republic of Georgia. In Oregon, that has meant an unexpected change in priorities for the humanitarian aid group Mercy Corps, which has an office in Portland. Mercy Corps has had teams living in Georgia since 2000, helping small farmers make a better living.

Joy Portella, Communications Director of Mercy Corps, says they've shifted into emergency mode, to get supplies to some of the 50,000 people who have fled their homes.

"We know that many of these people need food, so we're getting that to them right now. And we're doing a quick assessment to figure out what else they need, and how quickly we can get it to them."

Mercy Corps has already managed to distribute some food staples and has set up a fund for the Georgian refugees to help them buy more basics.

Portella says the relief efforts are challenging because the refugees have fled in different directions, with some of the 50,000 evacuees going north into Russia, and others heading south into other parts of Georgia.

"Food will not be the only thing these people will need. They've basically fled their homes, packed up whatever they could carry and left. So there are needs for shelter, for fuel, for blankets, and all the other basics that people will need to survive."
