WV Legislature Looks at Social Worker Safety

Charleston, WV – After the murder of Brenda Lee Yeager earlier this month, West Virginia's state leaders are looking at ways to keep social workers safe. Sadly, it's not the first time the legislature has taken up the issue. Delegate Virginia Mahan (D-Summers) says she has been concerned about this issue for years, and her "Select Committee A" recently reviewed social worker safety for state employees. The most recent case, she says, adds a new sense of urgency to the task.

"We're going to have to backtrack and take a look at, not only the people who work for DHHR, but folks like this lady, who was outside of state government but still in a dangerous situation."

Yeager was making a home visit to check on the welfare of an at-risk infant earlier this month when she was reported missing by her employer, a private company that handles case management for infants and senior citizens. Two of three suspects, the baby's parents, were arrested after Yeager's car was found on fire in a remote, wooded area near their home in Cabell County. Her body was found inside the vehicle.

Mahan says she has considered proposing that social workers take a deputy with them when they sense danger, although she realizes this could add to the workloads of small rural law enforcement staffs.

"In a tragedy like this, of course, everybody jumps to help. But later on, after some time has passed and there hasn't been another incident, they may begin to question why they have to do this."

Mahan says social workers who are state employees have assured her that they always take a partner when home visits carry risks. Select Committee A will be discussing multiple options to improve worker safety.
