Harrisburg, PA – Gov. Rendell is considering accepting federal money for sex education in schools. That would mean no more talking about the "birds and the bees," because the money is for "abstinence only until marriage" teaching.

Terri Klein in Pittsburgh is the mother of two teen boys. She says "abstinence only" has been promoted as sex education across the country for years, but study after study has shown it doesn't work. She points to statistics showing what's happening to teens as a result.

"Clearly, we wouldn't have the rise in teen pregnancies and STD rates if not talking about sexual behavior worked."

Union City High School senior Jordyn Bowen founded a peer education group that talks about sex education issues. She says the timeline for becoming sexually active varies, but everyone needs medically correct information to stay healthy.

"No matter what, it's going to happen. You need to be informed on the right and correct information in order to protect yourself in the future."

Gov. Rendell has been considering the federal money option because the Pennsylvania budget is tight. He is on record as supporting comprehensive sex education programs, which include the abstinence message along with information about sexually transmitted diseases and contraception. Supporters of "abstinence only" say it's in the best interest of teens' health, both psychologically and physically.
