Holiday Gifts from Washington to The World

Seattle, WA – If you're just not willing to storm the malls before daybreak on this busiest shopping weekend of the year, here's another option that can make your gift-giving dollars go twice as far. Mercy Corps, the humanitarian aid group with an office in Seattle, offers 20 different types of "Mercy Kits" to raise money for its international relief efforts.

The organization is still working with survivors of eight major crises that occurred throughout the year, from earthquakes in Pakistan and China, to floods in Honduras, to wars in Georgia and the Congo. Mercy Corps' Caitlin Carlson says giving a Mercy Kit accomplishes two things at once.

"Not only are you able to check off your list one of your holiday gifts, but you also help people in need around the world -– people who live on less than $1 a day."

The money buys emergency food and supplies, helps the agency plant trees, build latrines and safe water systems, and more. This year, it is sorely needed, says Carlson. In the United States, international crises were often eclipsed by news about politics and the economy.

"The Honduras floods and the Pakistan earthquake in October are really good examples of that. Not a lot of people have heard about the need in those areas, so it makes it more difficult for agencies like Mercy Corps to be able to respond."

When a Mercy Kit is purchased in someone's name as a gift, they receive a card and the money is earmarked for the relief purpose chosen by the giver. Mercy Kits can be ordered online on the Mercy Corps Web site (get more stories like this via email
