Rise in MO Teen Births Rekindles Sex Education Debate

St. Louis, MO – The sex education debate is heating up in the Show-Me State. After a 14-year decline, teen pregnancy is on the rise across the country for the second year in a row, with the rate in Missouri jumping eight percent.

The executive director of Faith Aloud, Reverend Rebecca Turner, is among those who feel the increase is the result of years of promotion of abstinence-only education in schools; she says open, realistic communication about sex is what is really needed.

"Just saying 'just say no' clearly isn't working. They need real honest information about how to protect themselves once they choose to become sexually active, whether that's during their teen years or years later."

Turner says teen pregnancy isn't just unhealthy for young mothers and their babies; it's also bad for the overall economy.

"An increase in teen birth rates always increases the poverty rate. Children who are born to teen mothers are at a
very high risk of living in poverty their entire lives, so this is an issue that ought to concern every single person."

Turner says comprehensive sex education programs are needed that encourage abstinence and provide information on contraception. While those opposed to that approach contend it sends mixed messages, supporters say teens need to be educated on how they can protect themselves from disease and unwanted pregnancy.

President Obama is expected to reveal in the coming weeks whether he will continue to seek funding for abstinence-only education.
