I Want My DTV: Cheap Converter Boxes for Iowans

Mason City, IA – In just over a month, many televisions in Iowa living rooms won’t be able to receive off-air signals anymore when TV stations begin broadcasting only digital signals. The old sets can be made to work with a digital converter box, but the cost of the box has kept many Iowans, particularly in rural areas, from making the switch. Now, an Iowa nonprofit has teamed with an electronics retailer to provide the boxes for next to nothing.

Amelia Deloney, senior fellow with the Main Street Project, says her group has joined forces with an electronics retailer so Iowans, especially those in areas far from retailers, can have converter boxes sent to them at little cost.

"They’ve set up a web site called freedtvshop.com. If you log onto that website with your forty dollar government coupon you can order a box and have it sent to you and all you’ll pay is a small amount, that's 3.95 for shipping."

Iowans who already have their converter boxes, but may have extra 40-dollar government coupons, can still put those coupons to good use.

"We have a second website for people who have extra coupons to donate and they can donate to our organization and we will get them out to people in rural communities who really need them. And that website is www.donatedtv.com."

She says a TV signal is more important than its capacity to receive reality shows and sitcoms. Many people, particularly in rural Iowa, rely on local stations for important weather announcements, community information, and emergency news.
