El sábado 27 es el Día Nacional del Examen de VIH (HIV, en inglés), en el que varios Proyectos AIDS (SIDA) y organizaciones locales ofrece n exámenes gratuitos para detectar esta infección.

Paralelamente se anunció un nuevo sitio de Internet que ofrece la ubicación y el porcentaje, por primera vez, de los casos de AIDS (SIDA) en California y en los Estados Unidos. La idea es ofrecer una herramienta para formarse una imagen más clara sobre este mal predominante. El Dr. Gary Puckrein, Presidente del "National Minority Quality Forum" (Foro Nacional de Calidad para las Minorías), dice que tienen esperanzas de que quienes hacen las políticas utilicen este Atlas para informarse y tener mejores bases al momento de distribuir los recursos.

"Quisimos que tuvieran datos que les sirvan para ver las necesidades de las comunidades y evaluar a dónde deben destinarse los programas de prevención y de acceso."

Se estima que cada año, en California, 700 personas son infectadas. De acuerdo con el California Department of Public Health (Departamento de Salud Pública de California), el estado tiene una de las tasas más elevadas de infección en los Estados Unidos, con más de 100 mil personas que viven con el VIH-SIDA (HIV-AIDS). El Dr. Puckrein dice que actualmente el 20 por ciento de los americanos que son VIH positivos no saben que tienen la enfermedad. Añade que por eso es importante que la gente se examine este sábado.

"Nuestra esperanza es que las comunidades se movilicen, que realmente comprendan el singular riesgo que pudiera estar corriendo la comunidad y que ahora podemos tener una intervención realmente focalizada"

Se han estado haciendo exámenes gratuitos en organismos del SIDA y en varias agencias sanitarias a nivel local o condados. El Dr. Puckrein lanza un llamado para motivar a los californianos para que aprovechen y se hagan el examen, que estará disponible sin costo en todo el estado.
