Sioux Falls, SD – Rising unemployment coupled with a loss of benefits is costing 2.3 million Americans their health coverage each year. Those statistics just released by Families USA include 4,280 South Dakotans who are losing their health benefits yearly. The sobering numbers have prompted the state’s faith community to weigh in on the health care reform debate.

Gene Miller, executive director of the Association of Christian Churches of South Dakota, calls it a justice issue.

"How can millions and millions of people in probably the most-industrialized country of the world be without health insurance? We’ve seen a spike in people going to thrift stores. I understand the same thing is true of Good Will. My most-recent first-hand experience has been to see a spike in people going to places like The Banquet and food pantries simply because their budgets are so tight."

Health care reform has become an urgent priority, Miller adds.

"Ecumenically, I’m not going to tell you that any one particular group or denomination has the answer. We’re looking to Congress and to the president of the United States to do that. But, the time has come. It’s urgent and the need is now."

Concerns about health care reform range from the predicted cost to fears of rationing and concerns private insurance companies will be driven out of business by a government-subsidized system.
