IA Kids Count Data Out Today

DES MOINES, Iowa - The 2009 Kids Count Data Book that looks at child well-being in Iowa and nationwide will be released today. Nationally, improvements have been made in six of the key indicators and declines have occurred in four. Even so, the improvements lag behind those seen in the late 1990s.

Mike Crawford of the Child and Family Policy Center is the Iowa project director for Kids Count, and he says Iowa continues to rank sixth in the nation for healthy kids - including a 20 percent decline in infant mortality rates.

"The child and teen death rates - those have all decreased over 20 percent since 2000, so that is very good, but there are a couple of areas where I think we need to work and improve. One of those is the percent of babies with low birth weight. "

Crawford says these numbers don't reflect the downturn in the economy, so the 2010 report will likely see big changes.

"It's data from before '08 when the economy really turned down, so unfortunately I'm thinking next year the numbers may appear to be worse, in terms of year-round employment and also some of the poverty figures, because of what's happened not only in Iowa but across the country in the last 12 to 18 months."

Advocates say another worry is that next year's state budget is expected to come up short and lawmakers may be tempted to make cuts that would affect children's long-term well-being.
