Study: MO Teen Birth On Rise Due To Less Contraceptive Use

St. Louis, MO - After a 12-year decline, evidence shows a rise in the teen birth rate across the country and in Missouri. The results indicate the rise is not necessarily due to an increase in sexual activity, but rather, a reduced use of contraceptives - specifically condoms.

Rev. Rebecca Turner, executive director of Faith Aloud, says a decade of faith-inspired curricula and an increased focus on abstinence is sending conflicting messages to teens.

"To withhold pieces of information from young people is frankly not only dishonest but immoral because it places them at terrible risk; risk for teen pregnancy as well as for sexually transmitted infections."

The study also questions whether an increased focus on abstinence instead of education is leading to the increased birth rates, an issue that is highly charged on both sides of the debate. The report anticipates further increases in teenage pregnancy. Federal funding for abstinence-only programs increased from $9 million a year in 1997 to $176 million in 2007.

Turner believes teens need support from their entire community, such as their parents and school, to deliver a message about safe sex in a scientific-based way. Churches need to be a part of that equation, she adds.

"There are so many faith groups that need to step up and help, and get involved in sex education."

Missouri had experienced an eight-percent increase in teen pregnancies as recently as 2006.

More information about the study, performed by Dr. John Santelli of the Columbia University in conjunction with researchers at Guttmacher Institute, is available at www.guttmacher.org/pubs/journals/reprints/Behavioral_Risk_Santelli_JAH.pdf.
